Sushi Platters for Parties in Leicester: How to Feed a Crowd This Season
From Diwali through to Christmas, this is the busiest stretch of the year for having people over. Family round for a celebration, a birthday in the middle of it all, friends who turn up "just for one". Somebody has to feed them, and the kitchen is already full. Sushi makes a good party spread because it is easy to eat standing up, needs no reheating, and feels like more of an occasion than another round of samosas and sandwiches. Here is how to put one together without the stress.
Ditch the giant tray
The classic sushi platter looks great for about ten minutes. Then the best pieces go first, the rest slide into each other, and someone is left picking at the gaps. Push-up sushi works differently. Each roll comes stacked in its own sealed tube, so you can line them up on the table, let guests grab one, and nothing gets squashed or picked over. It is also tidier. No chopsticks to wash, no soy puddles on the tablecloth.
How much sushi to order per person
A rough rule that works for most parties:
- Sushi as the main food: one 8 piece tube per adult.
- Sushi alongside other dishes: one 4 piece tube per person, or one 8 piece tube between two.
- Kids: a 4 piece Cucumber Maki or Chicken Katsu Maki each is usually plenty.
If in doubt, round up by a tube or two. Leftover sushi never lasts long.
Build a spread that suits everyone
Mixed guest lists are the norm at a family party, so cover the bases. For cooked crowd pleasers, the California Roll, Chicken Katsu Roll and Prawn Tempura Roll go fast. For the sushi fans, add a Spicy Tuna Roll with otoro tuna and a sriracha kick. For vegetarian guests, the Sweet Pumpkin Roll, with golden pumpkin croquettes and tonkatsu sauce, is far more filling than people expect, and the Cucumber Maki is a light extra.
For a bit of variety in each tube, the Mixed Roll lets you combine any two flavours in an 8 piece roll, available in the City Classics, Loaded and Premium Picks ranges. And because Sushi City is halal certified, it is one less thing to worry about when you are catering for family.
Don't forget dips, drinks and dessert
Add a handful of £1 dips so people can mix it up: Japanese mayo, sriracha mayo, tonkatsu sauce, soy sauce and pickled ginger are the usual favourites. Grab a few Ramune in Original, Lychee and Strawberry for something different on the drinks table.
Then finish properly. The Chocolate Crunch Roll is chocolate crunch cake wrapped in a warm Nutella crepe and sliced like sushi, and the Chocolate Fudge cake comes in half or full sizes. Both are made for sharing.
Timing your party order
Order when the first guests arrive rather than hours before, so it lands fresh. On busy weekend evenings, place the order a little earlier than you think you need to.
